Mrs. Walker

Living it up in Life Science!

Tuesday, 11-24

In science today, we will do the following:

1.  Complete definitons for the skeletal system.  You can download a copy from here.

2.  We will make our own skeleton model.  He’s gonna look really cute!

In ELA, we will play our games in our groups to prepare for the day we play for a grade.  (MONDAy)

Monday, 11-23

In ELA, we are still working on games for our horror fiction.  These should be finished tomorrow.

In science, we read 5. 3 and watched a video on genetic engineering.  If you were absent today, do the questions at the end of the section and write 10 facts from it.

Friday, November 13

ELA:

1.  We took our test over “The Tell-Tale Heart”.

2.  We completed the definitions for the following words.  The definitions should be finished as homework.  Students should not have to do this as they had at least 30 minutes in class to work on them!  Only copy the first two definitions:

Sherry, redress, immolate, motley, surmount, amontillado, cask, rampart, palazzo, catacomb, abscond, rheum, sconce, flambeaux, leer, repose, obstinate, puncheon, flagon, trowel, recess, circumscribe, niche, fetter.

3.  Draw a picture to represent each word.  The pictures do not have to be done this week.  Only the definitions should be finished.

Science:

We read chapter 5, section 1 in second and 4th periods.  We then completed the drawing on page 140.  It should be colored and labeled.

First period science read a different handout and did the questions at the end.  If you were absent today, see me for the handout on Monday.

Thursday, November 12

Science:

1.  Students read and completed an Edhelper article “DNA Structure”.  I took this up for a grade.

2.  We finished our DNA models. If you were out today and have started the model, please be sure that you have finished coloring it before you return to school.

3.  We watched a Brainpop video on DNA and took the quiz over it.

ELA:

1.  We had the following journal topic:  Why do you think the narrator reveals himself at the end of the story?

2.  We completed some analogies using our vocabulary words.  Write the correct word that finishes the analogies below:

a.  ________ is to dull as loud is to soft.

b.  harass is to ____ as barbaric is to uncultured.

c.  ____ is to fissure as tunnel is to shaft.

d.  ______ is to assumption as guess is to hypothesis.

e.  Contempt is to _____ as disparaging is to detractive.

f.  _____ is to express as conceal is to reveal.

g.  wax is to ______ as grow is to shrink

h.  listen is to _________ as speak is to utter

3.  We also began our projects which are due tomorrow.  You may choose from the following:

a.  Draw a 6-frame comic strip that tells the story of “The Tell-Tale Heart”.  Be sure to include important details from the story.  Write from the omniscient point of view.  Your comic strip must be colored.  If you are not good at art, do not select this!

b.  You may write a police report about the situation.  Explain what officers would have to say about what took place.  Tell who was involved, what happened and why.  Explain how the events unfolded.  Discuss the behavior of the people who were involved and why you were even there to begin with.  A police report is impartial with no judgments-just observations.  For example, instead of saying the suspect was crazy, write “The suspect appeared to be disoriented or confused.”

STUDY FOR YOUR TEST OVER THE STORY TOMORROW!!

November 11 Wednesday

Science:

No warm up

1.  We took notes on DNA.  If you were absent today, borrow

someone’s notes to copy.

2.  We began working on our DNA model.  There was no homework.

ELA:

We reviewed “The Tell Tale Heart”.

We completed an assignment on first degree murder and the

insanity plea.  If you are absent, read the story again.  Find the definition of murder according to the law of GA.  Then find examples in the

story that will help you decide if the narrator is guilty of first degree

murder or if he could use insanity as his plea.  Give lines from

the story and page numbers where the material was

located.

Tuesday, November 3

Science:

We read 4-1.  We completed the following questions:

1.  What is meiosis and why is it important?

2.  How do the chromosomes move during meiosis?

3.  Compare and contrast meiosis and mitosis.

We then made study cards for each of the steps of meiosis.

Wednesday, November 4

Science:

We watched a video on meiosis.  We completed a quiz while we watched.  If you were absent, just write me a paragraph about meiosis.  Tell me what it is, how it takes place, and why it is important.  Be sure that you have finished up your meiosis cards.

ELA:

We took our test over “The Monkey’s Paw”.  We then defined the following words: vehement, gesticulate, hearken, acute, dissimulate, vex, profound, sagacity, derision, crevice, marrow, suave, audacity, ere, supposition, wane  You should write all of the definitions except for profound and acute.  Use the following sentences to decide which definition to write.

The profound old man thought a great deal about life.

His sense of hearing was acute, and he could hear the slightest noise.

I will also be collecting the wanted poster or the wishmaker design tomorrow.  Be sure to color it and make it look good.  Make sure that you have included all of the required details.

Tuesday 10/27

Science

We watched a movie in science today called “Chromosomes and Genes”.  We took notes over chromosomes, genes, meiosis, and mitosis.  Just write 15 facts from chapter 4, section 1 to make up this assignment.  Don’t forget to turn this in when you return.

ELA

Today we did Tuesday’s DGP.  We also went to the library and checked out either a biography or autobiography.  I gave an assignment for your reading homework.  See me as soon as you return for this is you are absent today.  We also began our vocabulary assignment for “The Monkey’s Paw”.  We are doing Frayer Models.  Your Frayer model will include:  your guess at the definition, the actual definition, 3 synonyms and 3 antonyms.

Monday, 10-26

Science

Warm-up:  Write the questions and the word that matches each description.

1.  the results of mitosis

2.  genetic material during  mitosis

3.  process that involves two parent cells

a.  chromosomes          b.  asexual reproduction     c.  sexual reproduction

d.  daughter cells    e.  parent cells

1.  We read chapter 4, section 1.

2.  We took notes over this section.  Borrow someone’s notes to copy if you were out today.  You also should add the diagram on page 102 to your notes.  Include everything on the diagram (writing and drawing) and then color the finished product.  The diagram should be drawn on your notes.  The notes and diagram are item #10 in your notebook.  Call this work 4.1 Notes.

Your homework is to finish the drawing and all of the vocabulary for chapter 4.  You should already have sections 1 and 2 completed.

ELA

1.  We corrected our DGP from last week and did today’s DGP sentence.

2.  We completed a worksheet on appositives “Accentuate the Appositive”.  Students also had to write 8 additional sentences of their own using the guidelines on this worksheet.

3.  We also began our vocabulary for “The Monkey’s Paw”.  Students had to guess the meaning of the vocabulary using sentences.  They then had to do a Frayer model for each of the words.

Tuesday, October 20

Science:

No warm up today!

We completed a review sheet for our test which will be on Thursday.  We also watched a Brainpop movie on asexual reproduction.  You can watch the movie at home until 4:00  in the afternoon.   Just log in using ucmspanthers for the sign in and the password.  Take the quiz.  Please print a copy and fill it out.
