Tuesday 10/27

Science

We watched a movie in science today called “Chromosomes and Genes”.  We took notes over chromosomes, genes, meiosis, and mitosis.  Just write 15 facts from chapter 4, section 1 to make up this assignment.  Don’t forget to turn this in when you return.

ELA

Today we did Tuesday’s DGP.  We also went to the library and checked out either a biography or autobiography.  I gave an assignment for your reading homework.  See me as soon as you return for this is you are absent today.  We also began our vocabulary assignment for “The Monkey’s Paw”.  We are doing Frayer Models.  Your Frayer model will include:  your guess at the definition, the actual definition, 3 synonyms and 3 antonyms.

Monday, 10-26

Science

Warm-up:  Write the questions and the word that matches each description.

1.  the results of mitosis

2.  genetic material during  mitosis

3.  process that involves two parent cells

d.  daughter cells    e.  parent cells

1.  We read chapter 4, section 1.

2.  We took notes over this section.  Borrow someone’s notes to copy if you were out today.  You also should add the diagram on page 102 to your notes.  Include everything on the diagram (writing and drawing) and then color the finished product.  The diagram should be drawn on your notes.  The notes and diagram are item #10 in your notebook.  Call this work 4.1 Notes.

Your homework is to finish the drawing and all of the vocabulary for chapter 4.  You should already have sections 1 and 2 completed.

ELA

1.  We corrected our DGP from last week and did today’s DGP sentence.

2.  We completed a worksheet on appositives “Accentuate the Appositive”.  Students also had to write 8 additional sentences of their own using the guidelines on this worksheet.

3.  We also began our vocabulary for “The Monkey’s Paw”.  Students had to guess the meaning of the vocabulary using sentences.  They then had to do a Frayer model for each of the words.

Tuesday, October 20

Science:

No warm up today!

We completed a review sheet for our test which will be on Thursday.  We also watched a Brainpop movie on asexual reproduction.  You can watch the movie at home until 4:00  in the afternoon.   Just log in using ucmspanthers for the sign in and the password.  Take the quiz.  Please print a copy and fill it out.

ELA

1.  We completed DGP, week #10, Tuesday’s sentence.  We did the DLP for Monday and Tuesday.

2.  We completed a worksheet called “Accentuate the Appositive”.

3.  We finished reading the story “Three Skeleton Key” and wrote a one-paragraph response.  The question for the response was:  “Would you have stayed on the island as our narrator did, or would you have left never to return again?”  Please explain your reasons.

Monday, October 18

Science:

Warm up- Please complete questions 1 – 6 on page 97 of your book.  You should write the questions.

1.  We completed notes over asexual reproduction.  Borrow these from someone if you are absent and do not have a computer.  If you do have a computer, then use the search section for my page. Enter asexual reproduction and the notes will come up for you to copy.

2.  We read section 3 of chapter 3 again.

Chapter 3 test on Thursday of this week.  Study the notes and other items in your notebook.  Also, be sure to read chapter 3 again.  The cell cycle cards are also extremely important.  You MUST know them.

ELA

1.  We completed week 10 DGP’s Monday sentence.

2.  We copied the vocabulary for the story “Three Skeleton Key”.  You should also include the terms suspense and foreshadowing.

3.  We started reading the story “Three Skeleton Key”.  We have not finished it yet.

October 9 Thursday

Science Homework:  We have a mitosis reading sheet that you need to finish if it was not done in class.

ELA Homework:  We completed week 9 DGP and DLP.  Your DAR papers are due tomorrow.

Wednesday, October 7

Science:

Warm Up:  Pg. 95 Number 5-11

Today in science, we completed a worksheet on the cell cycle.  It is called “The mystery of Cells”.  We also completed our study cards for the cell cycle.

Homework:  Finish cell cycle cards.

ELA

Today we completed definitions for a context clues activity.  The words that we defined are:  abate, adorn, ardent, cater, devour, elicit, endure, enthrall, extraordinary, former, ponder, procure, regal, scrutinize, sheer

We completed a cloze activity after the definitions.

Journal:  Describe the qualities you most admire in someone you might call a hero.

We also discussed the story “Drummer Boy of Shiloh”.

Tuesday, October 6

Science:

Warm Up:  Consider your muscle tissue.  What makes up muscle tissue and what process forms it?  How does a muscle cell become a muscle cell?  How is this determined?

Today we watched a video called “Mitosis”.  We completed a quiz as we watched it.  If you are absent today, you may make this up by writing 25 facts about mitosis.  Label your paper “Mitosis Video Make-up”.  We also took notes on cell division.  Borrow these from another classmate  and copy them.  The following items make up our notebook:

2.  Cell Division Notes                                 4.  Cell Division Vocabulary/Notes

You should also be working on your cover for your notebook.  Everyone should have a table of contents completed as well.

ELA

We did DGP and daily language practice for Monday and Tuesday.  See me for the daily language.  We read “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” and discussed the aspects that we liked or disliked about the story.  We finished by doing 6 questions over it.  Today’s journal:  Discuss a quality you have that you dislike.

DAR paper is due FRIDAY!

Monday, October 5

Science:

1.  We completed the following warm-up:  Why do cells divide?

2.  Read section 2 of chapter 3.  Do the questions on page 85.  Answer using complete sentences.  The questions will be item 3 in your notebook.

3.  We also watched two Brainpop movies (Mitosis and Growth).  You can print quizzes from the site and do them.  The password for the movies is ucmspanthers.  Use this as your logon and your password.

ELA:

1.  We completed the DGP for Monday of week 9.

2.  Today’s journal:  What do you like or dislike about historical fiction?

3.  We read an example of historical fiction.  I printed it off www.helium.com/items/978393-short-stories-historical-fiction.  It is a story by Kerry Johnson.  It’s an example of historical fiction.  If you print the story, read it and make notes about what the author did well or what the author needs to work on as far as his writing style and the story.

Homework:  Work on your DAR paper.  The final draft is due this Friday.



Thursday, 10-1

Science: Today we are going to finish the egg lab.  We made our final measurements and will make a line graph .  The line graph will show the type of liquid on the x-axis and the circumference of the egg on the y-axis. We are starting to assemble our notebook.  The first item is chapter 3 vocabulary.  Please see me for a notebook form.

Homework:  No homework!!  Just make sure chapter 3 vocabulary is finished. If the egg paper and chart are not finished, then finish these tonight too, please.
